Common Faults and Solutions for Air-Cooled Engines 1

Nov. 26, 2024

Engine won't turn or turns slowly

fault cause

Solution

The flameout solenoid valve does not work

Check the circuit and flameout solenoid valve.

Engine start with load

Check the engine flywheel end load.

Flywheel and crankshaft rotation is restricted

Rotate the crankshaft manually and check the flywheel and crankshaft resistance.

Incorrect wiring of the starting circuit

Analyze and repair starting circuits (including relays and switches).

Low battery

Charge the batteries and check the alternator.

The starting motor is not working properly

Replace the starting motor.

The surface of the flywheel ring gear teeth is worn flat or damaged

Replace the flywheel ring gear.

Difficulty starting the engine (no smoke from the exhaust)

fault cause

Solution

The fuel level in the tank is low

Refill fuel.

Fuel shut-off valve closed

Open the valve.

Using improper fuel

Replace with fuel of the correct grade.

Fuel tank breathing hole blocked

Clean the tank breather.

Oil suction or oil return is not smooth

Check the oil suction and return pipes.

The flameout electromagnet must not be energized

Check wiring and solenoid valve.

The flameout solenoid does not work

Replace the flameout solenoid.

Air pre-cleaner clogged

Clean the air pre-cleaner.

Fuel filter or filter is clogged

Clean or replace the fuel filter or screen.

Fuel line leak

Clean or replace fuel lines.

The fuel pump is damaged or stuck

Replace the fuel pump.

High pressure oil pump wear

Replace the high-pressure oil pump.

Check valve damage

Replace the spray check valve.

Difficulty starting the engine (smoke from the exhaust)

fault cause

Solution

The ambient temperature is too low and the preheating controller fails.

Replace the preheat controller and take auxiliary measures.

Starting speed is too low (minimum starting speed: 150 rpm)

Check the battery and recharge or replace it.

Incorrect fuel grade

Drain the fuel and replace it with fuel of appropriate grade according to the ambient temperature.

Fuel tank breather valve is clogged (fuel tank cap)

Clean the fuel tank breather valve (fuel tank cap).

Air filter clogged

Clean or replace the air filter.

Air pre-cleaner clogged

Clean the pre-filter.

Fuel filter or filter is clogged

Clean or replace the fuel filter or screen.

Fuel system leaks, is clogged, or contains air

Repair and clean the fuel system and remove the air from the fuel system.

Incorrect fuel injection pump timing

Re-adjust the injection pump timing.

Incorrect valve clearance adjustment

Measure and readjust valve clearance.

Supercharger damage

Check and replace the supercharger.

Injector opening pressure decreases

Correct or replace the injector.

Fuel injection pump failure

Repair or replace the fuel injection pump.

Wear of piston ring or cylinder causes compression pressure to drop

Replace worn piston rings or cylinders.
