How to use diesel engines in plateau areas

Fault Analysis on Diesel Engine Failure to Start (3)

1. Due to the low air pressure in the plateau area, the air is thin and contains less nutrients. Especially for naturally aspirated diesel engines, the combustion conditions deteriorate due to insufficient intake volume, so that the diesel engine cannot produce the original rated power. Even if the diesel engines are basically the same, the rated power of various types of diesel engines is different, so their ability to work in the plateau is different.

Considering the tendency of delayed ignition under plateau conditions, for the sake of diesel engine operation economy, it is generally recommended that the fuel supply advance angle of naturally aspirated diesel engines should be appropriately advanced.

Due to the increase in altitude, the power decreases and the exhaust temperature rises. Therefore, users should also consider the plateau working ability of the diesel engine when selecting a diesel engine, and strictly avoid overload operation.

According to experimental proofs in recent years, for diesel engines used in plateau areas, the exhaust gas turbocharging method can be used as power compensation for the plateau. Exhaust gas turbocharging can not only make up for the lack of plateau power, but also improve smoke color, restore power performance and reduce fuel consumption rate.

2. With the increase of altitude, the ambient temperature is lower than that in plain areas. Generally, the ambient temperature will drop by about 0.6 degrees Celsius for every 1000M increase. In addition, due to the thin air in the plateau, the starting performance of the diesel engine is worse than that in the plain area. When using, the user should take auxiliary starting measures corresponding to low temperature starting.

3. Due to the increase in altitude, the boiling point of water decreases, and the wind pressure and cooling air quality of the cooling air decrease, as well as the increase in heat dissipation per kilowatt per unit time. Therefore, the heat dissipation conditions of the cooling system are worse than those in the plain. Generally, it is not advisable to use an open cooling cycle in plateau altitude areas. A pressurized closed cooling system can be used to increase the boiling point of the coolant when used in the plateau.
